YOUTH GARDEN CLUB ACHIEVEMENT PATCH PROGRAM

 

Goal: To educate our youth about garden clubs and to promote the love of gardening, floral design, civic development, environmental stewardship, and the history of GCNC.

1.      Garden Club Research

a.      Visit a local adult garden club meeting

b.      Learn about the club’s history; how it has changed through the years?

c.       Learn the mission and goals of GCNC

d.      Visit the website:  www.gardenclubofnc.org

2.      Gardens

a.      Plant a tree and watch it grow; record the data of each season

b.      Volunteer to work in a community garden, church, or school garden

c.       Plant a flower pot and grow a plant

d.      Plant a garden or container garden

3.      Design

a.      Make a floral arrangement

b.      Enter a flower show

c.       Plant a Fairy Garden

d.      Study the elements of design or attend a design class

4.      Community

a.      Celebrate: Arbor Day or Earth Day

b.      Complete a community service project such as cleaning up litter

c.       Complete a garden therapy project with a sick or elderly person

d.      Promote National Garden Week (1st week of June)

5.      Horticulture

a.      Propagate a plant

b.      Learn the parts of a plant

c.       Learn about native plants

d.      Learn why pollinators are important to plants

6.      Bird Project

a.      Learn about your favorite bird

b.      Learn about how birds help our gardens

c.       Research the Cardinal

d.      Research the Eastern Bluebird

e.      Build a bird house

f.        Start a bluebird trail

   7.      Education

a.      Keep a gardening journal

b.      Read The Frightened Frog from NGC and write a short summary

c.       Attend a workshop about any aspect of gardening

8.      Enter a GCNC youth program contest for individuals

9.      Enter a GCNC youth program contest

10.  Submit a book of evidence (scrapbook) to verify your work for the GCNC Achievement Patch

 

Notes: 

·         K-3rd Grades must complete at least one requirement from each of the 10 categories.
·         4th-6th Grades must complete at least 2 requirements from each of the 10 categories.
·         7th--9th Grades must complete at least 3 requirements from each of the 10 categories.
·         8th – 12th Grades must complete 4 or more requirements from each of the 10 categories.

 
The Youth Garden Club Achievement Patch Program is for the serious youth garden club members.

The patch is earned by completing the work. The patch is free to the youth garden club leader to present to the youth who meets the requirements.
