New Hanover Garden Club Blessing Bag Presentation
In the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic Olive Tree Blessing Bags was born in Apex, NC. Suzanne Tarry, owner, was looking for a way to give back to our first responders who gave and continue to give so much to all of us. The New Hanover Garden Club’s theme this year is “Planting Blessings”. It only seemed natural that Suzanne would be the featured speaker at the garden club’s October meeting. The members of the NHGC had been gathering herbs and flowers from their gardens and had dried them to bring to the meeting. Together with Suzanne’s fillers and scent oils, the garden club members mixed and prepared sachets. They then bagged 100 blessing bags to be presented to the critical care COVID 19 nurses at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center. We are presenting these bags to these heros as a small thank you for the sacrifices they make each day for all of us. The New Hanover Garden Club is “planting a blessing”, as a small thank you to those who bless us.
The pandemic caused many 2020 grden tours to be postponed or canceled. With the next scheduled update a new page will be added specifically for information on 2021 spring garden tours. If your club is planning a spring tour, do submit your information and images for the next update in December/January.

New Hanover Garden Club
The New Hanover Garden Club, District 11, has disbursed three mini grants using proceeds from Art & The Bloom 2020. The recipients were the Community Enrichment Initiatives, Inc, to establish an orchard at their farm which serves food disadvantaged folks in the Wilmington area, the Bellamy Mansion to work toward the restoration of the gardens to the original plantings of Mrs. Bellamy, and to the Friends of the Arboretum to support the many programs in the community offered by the NHC Arboretum. This fall the NHGC will be awarding two scholarships in Gardening and Landscape Studies and Horticulture to two deserving students at Cape Fear Community College. Thanks to all who supported Art & The Bloom in some way which allows us to give back in so many worthy ways. Submitted by Barb Bittler.
Cedarwood Garden Club
The Cedarwood Garden club just had their “May” end of year meeting and installation of officers on June 20th due to the virus and stay at home mandates. Here is a picture and the narrative sent to the Jamestown News.
“ On Saturday, the Cedarwood Garden Club held a “socially distanced” reduced meeting to install the 2020-2021 officers. With refreshments on Stacy Fogleman’s deck and chairs on her lawn, the members enjoyed being outside in the beautiful morning sunshine. Brief updates on community projects were discussed; however, most are not going forward due to the virus. Cece Leonard installed the officers and then the meeting was adjourned. In the picture are from left to right and bottom to top: Stacy Fogleman, Assistant Secretary-Treasurer; Sherrie Richmond, President; Joan Foster, First Vice-President; Doris Porter, Secretary; Sharla Gardner, Second Vice-President; Betty LaBella, Treasurer.”
