NCDOT Wildflower Program

In addition to support for public gardens across the state of North Carolina, The Garden Club of North Carolina was instrumental in assisting with the initiation of highway beautification through the N.C. Department of Transportation’s Wildflower Program.  For more than 30 years, the program has enhanced the overall appearance and environmental quality of the state’s highways.

Wildflower beds are installed and maintained across the state by Roadside Environmental personnel in each of the 14 highway divisions. GCNC is the lead sponsor of the Wildflower Program and continues its support by sponsoring and judging the Annual Awards competition in which NCDOT Districts vie for the best-looking flower beds in each region, as well as the best overall highway division wildflower program.

Information about the NCDOT Wildflower Program, along with a PDF booklet identifying plants used, can be found here.
